Wingtip Sloat covers "Anything Could Happen" by The Clean
Просмотров 6507 лет назад
Lo-fi legends Wingtip Sloat hailed from Virginia where they recorded some of the best little homemade records of the early 1990s. Here's their cover of a classic by The Clean from New Zealand. The Kiwi version came out in 1981. and Sloat's appeared on a hissy cassette ten years later (marred by a little glitch where the sound cuts out, which I've removed for your listening pleasure).

Bengali Farmers' Anthem (Played On Plastic Barrels)
This is absolutely incredible.
Instant hit
Just saw this posted here - this is me recording / engineering The Raincoats at our Spaceward Studios in Cambridge in '79, alongside Mayo Thompson and Geoff Travis. The write-up above is incorrect in mentioning Adam Kidron. You can hear the band saying "hello Mike".
huge piece of history you're a part of then. These girls mean a lot to me
Vad skönt att det är textning på svenska. 🙂
For those interested, the recording studio in this video is 'Spaceward Studio' in Cambridge. Stiff Little Fingers recorded there, as did the UK Subs, The Users and many others too. The opening shots show the view looking down Clarendon Street, there's a pub called The Clarendon Arms on the left (you can just make out the Greene King logo on an A-board high above the door) & then, in that turning which is actually Victoria Street, was Spaceward Studio, underneath that big house on the corner opposite the pub. The pub's no longer the friendly Irish pub it once was but it is still trading today. Spaceward Studios moved to the village of Stretham, just outside Cambridge, developed into a really high-end audio-visual facility & today do some sort of sonic work for British scientific & aerospace type companies. I was once in a punk band that recorded there.
inspiring... i'm thinking of starting a band called The Mac & Tosh's.

Yeah. Watching her drumming is thrilling.
I hear she has found the lord
Any CAN is good can Thx
Oh FFS! This is heart-breaking! Could have been the most wonderful video, but ruined by the editing so the end result is like a masterclass in mansplaining.
Saw Johanna Went perform numerous times in DTLA, met her once at KPFK studios during one her "exhibitions"- she was a big deal in the early 80's, a feature of the punk scene at the time. I've never witnessed anything like it since (early Yoko doesn't even come close). Utter anarchy/debauchery, but controlled chaos. She had her props, masks, costumes, lots of bodily fluids at the ready.
very cool post... chuckling a bit about SLF signing to a larger label because that's exactly what they did after the first album.
I do believe that is a classic Hugo doll from the 70s embedded in that mass of gelatin.
Thank you Kurt Cobain for introducing me to this band
it is a shame that EVERY artist doesnt have video of them recording their very first single.
Ótima banda.... gosto muito
The Raincoats are the future
BRILLIANT!! Wonderful journey down the yellow brick memory road.
Thank you for sharing this .

I once had the pleasure of sheltering from the rain alongside The Raincoats. Ah, we were all so much younger then.
I saw them live in Toronto on 9/23/11. It rained that night. :)
@@theunrealtimemm For me it was Notting Hill Carnival 1982.
@@TheSpikehere Did it rain that day too?
@@leopoldbluesky I think it was a short-ish shower. A small group of us (audience and Raincoats) sheltered under the bridge that goes over the Grand Uniion Canal, near Meanwhile Gardens where they played.
....the girl on drums.....grew up to be Kitty Daisy, and Lewis' mum.....who'd have thought....
Respectfully, that woman on drums grew up to be Sandy, Macarena and Hannah's mother...who'd have thought... Paloma Romero was the drummer in the Raincoats on the first single and on the first album. She left the band right before the album was released. Kitty Daisy and Lewis' mum (Ingrid Weiss) became the new drummer and was the drummer on the album Odyshape and on the tour for that album.
Now you know the rest of the story...
@@islachira1603 Respectfully, I think you have that slightly wrong. Ingrid was drummer on parts of the Odyshape album, but other drummers on the album were Charles Hayward, Richard Dudanski and Robert Wyatt. I went to see them shortly after they released Odyshape and Charles Hayward was the drummer throughout (don't know about the other dates). And they were wonderful.
Excellence.
suddenly this clip is one of the most important things to me

Thanks for extracting this hidden gem from that TV show!

Whoa! This version doesn’t have the horrible tape gap in it! I have the original cassettte and it has a really nasty skip/jump leading into one of the choruses. It’s enough to really mar what is already a beautifully ramshackle song. In the early 90’s I was crate digging at Pier Platter Records in Hoboken and talking to the manager, and a guy interjected who was a hired studio musician (violin?) for wingtip sloat...
Glad you appreciate this glitchless version. Sloat’s cover is so raw and heartfelt that it rivals the original.
Amazing that they hired anybody! I always viewed Sloat as existing outside of any monetary economy... Perhaps they were paid in sand dollars or something.
morganfitzp completely agree. I often thought that this song (the clean’s version) was too close to their other great song Oddity, but when I heard Wingtip Sloat’s slightly higher octane version I was like, OH YEAH
well do they go on red wood A tell all cliff grips hands an older song i wrote a guy sitting in a sandy neon that feels o
Well said.
He got in the car and drove. The grandfather clock on the dashboard wasn’t below six. It was well attached in its normal container. He reached the clock with his eyes, then in hindsight, reached a hand below the car. It wasn’t time to switch lanes, instead he looked over his shoulder, away from the clock, and pulled into the driveway of the bar. The spots were so crowded that he turned the car around, went back home, and got to work making the shortbread cookies he was planning on. Towards the beginning of the oven’s warming up, as the cookies still sat on the counter in a jello like consistency, he put the canopy in auto pilot and broke off a quarter out of the change purse. He threw that ball with the rest of the quarters out the window, and down the street. He was glad he couldn’t see to the bottom of the tray of cookies. Enjoying the sound of the once again light spray of rain out the window, he stood there, but disappointed he thought, as he pulled a five dollar bill he didn’t know he had out of his pocket, that he wasn’t able to mix the oil in with the batter. He tried a sample whether or not this was foolish, and they tasted buttery. Like his memory of short bread reminded him. The plane out the window flew over the top of the house and he remembered to put the thyme in the mixture. Just on top.

These stuck up yuppies come in to our city because they want to be cool. This is what is destroying Philly. The neighborhoods may be getting fixed up, but this gentrification is destroying the lives of people who have lived in this city for generations. The property values are forcing people out. If we the working class and low income moved into their hometowns, they would all start complaining, but the want to come here and do what ever they want. They party all hours of the day and night, take up parking, and act as if the community is theirs.
Yeah, in an Indian city just bring the drums, and the traffic will play horns for you!
Cool! Never seen these kind of drums. Great to see that the srummers enjoy. The traffic noise in the background makes you realise it is India all the way :)
